YOUNG EAGLES SOAR TO MPDA CLUB WORLD CUP GLORY!
Vernon “Serrit” Martin shines as MPRA champions edge Guardians in thrilling title decider
Every FIFA World Cup year, the Premier teams of MPRA and ODA go head-to-head in a one-round league competition, with the coveted MPDA Club World Cup title up for grabs. This year, five clubs from each association stepped up to the oche, all dreaming of being crowned champions. Four years ago, Strugglers claimed the inaugural title, but this time the spotlight belonged to Young Eagles of MPRA.
On the final day, the MPRA frontrunners faced ODA’s Guardians in a winner-takes-all showdown. Young Eagles needed only a draw to secure the title, while Guardians had to produce a big performance to spoil the party.
Young Eagles got off to the perfect start, racing into a 2–0 lead as Jude Williams and Vernon Martin defeated Clifford Stradling and Craig Williams respectively. However, Guardians fought back when JP Smith and young prospect Jaden Erasmus overcame the Moodley brothers, Hayden and Jayden, to level the contest at 2–2.
The match continued to deliver high-quality darts. In Leg 5, Jude Williams produced one of the night's outstanding moments, checking out a magnificent 137 against Craig Williams to put Young Eagles ahead 3–2.
Jayden Moodley and Vernon Martin then extended the lead to 5–2 with back-to-back victories. Erasmus pulled one leg back for Guardians, leaving Young Eagles ahead 5–3 at the halfway stage.
Hayden Moodley opened the second half by beating Clifford Stradling in a 17-dart leg to claim his only leg of the night and push Young Eagles closer to glory.
Leg 11 provided another memorable moment. Martin, brilliant throughout the evening, narrowly missed a 142 checkout when his third dart just missed tops. But he showed his composure moments later, returning to the oche and checking out on tops with his very first dart to move Young Eagles to the brink of victory.
JP Smith refused to surrender, winning the next two legs to keep Guardians in the hunt. With three legs remaining, Young Eagles held a slender 7–6 advantage, and the tension was palpable.
Then came the moment the Young Eagles faithful had been waiting for. Up stepped Vernon “Serrit” Martin, the star performer of the evening. He delivered once again, defeating Stradling to claim his fourth leg of the match and, more importantly, secure the eighth point Young Eagles needed to clinch the MPDA Club World Cup title.
The Young Eagles camp erupted in celebration. Guardians claimed the final two consolation legs, but the title was already safely in Young Eagles’ hands, and the celebrations were well underway.
The victory was even more impressive considering that Young Eagles’ top player, Vernon Bouwers, was unavailable for the decisive encounter because of work commitments. His teammates rose to the occasion, showing the depth, determination and fighting spirit that champions are made of.
Beat of Order finished third, while ODA will have to wait for another opportunity to bring the coveted trophy home.
MPRA chairperson Gershwin Nicholson had every reason to be delighted with his team’s performance. Yet, while the entire Young Eagles side deserved recognition, the night unquestionably belonged to Vernon “Serrit” Martin, whose magnificent display proved decisive in one of the most thrilling title deciders the competition has produced.
Congratulations to Young Eagles on an epic victory and a memorable achievement!
There is also talk that the competition could move to a biennial format, with the MPDA Club World Cup potentially being staged every two years from now on.
