SHOULD WE INTRODUCE A HALF-TIME BREAK?
SHOULD WE INTRODUCE A HALF-TIME BREAK?
FROM THE OCHE TO SPORT
CTD wants to hear from the darters!
The introduction of exclusion zones and electronic scoring has changed the way we play and administer darts. The game is becoming more structured, disciplined and professional.
So, should we take the next step?
CTD is considering the introduction of a 15-minute half-time/strategy break during team matches, particularly in the Men A and Ladies A tiers, and we want to hear what the players think.
WHY A HALF-TIME BREAK?
A 15-minute break would give team leads and captains an opportunity to assess the match, discuss strategy and prepare their teams for the second half.
It would also give players who may be struggling an opportunity to speak to their teammates or captain, reset and return to the oche with a clear head.
There is another important advantage: everyone gets a break.
Instead of players leaving the playing area individually during a match to visit the ablution facilities, bar or smoking area, the scheduled break provides an appropriate opportunity to do so.
Team leads can therefore keep their players available at the boards during the match, knowing that a proper break is coming.
WILL IT MAKE MATCHES LONGER?
This is an important consideration.
Our experience with electronic scoring is that matches are being completed considerably quicker, with the time between games reduced through automatic game progression and improved administration.
The proposal is therefore that the introduction of a 15-minute half-time break should not materially affect the regular match-day schedule, particularly if the breaks between individual games continue to be kept short.
PLAYERS ALSO HAVE A RESPONSIBILITY
A half-time break should not become an excuse for poor preparation.
Players should arrive at least 30 minutes before the scheduled start and use that time to warm up properly and prepare for the match.
Players should also manage their consumption responsibly before a match. Regularly leaving the playing area to visit the ablution facilities, bar or smoking area while a match is underway disrupts the flow of the game and can place pressure on team leads and other players.
The proposed break would provide a designated opportunity to attend to these needs.
LET'S TAKE DARTS FORWARD
Anyone involved in darts knows that introducing change is not always easy. There can be strong resistance whenever something new is proposed, even when the intention is to improve the sport.
But darts has already changed significantly.
Exclusion zones have improved playing discipline.
Electronic scoring has improved administration and match flow.
Could a structured half-time break be the next step towards making team darts an even more professional sporting experience?
NOW WE WANT YOUR OPINION
Before CTD considers introducing this, we want to hear from the darters themselves.
Would a 15-minute half-time strategy break improve team matches?
Should it apply only to Men A and Ladies A, or should it eventually be introduced across other tiers?
Would you support it at association and club level where electronic scoring is being used?
Or do you believe the current format should remain unchanged?
There is no decision yet. This is a consultation.
Let's hear the arguments for and against and see whether we can collectively take another positive step forward.
HAVE YOUR SAY!
Darts belongs to the players.
The future of the sport should be shaped with the players.
CTD looks forward to hearing your views.
